LG Appliance Error Codes: What Supers Should Know

LG washer, dryer and refrigerator codes from LG's US Help Library, with the resets and checks LG recommends and the fridge codes that always need service.

On LG washers, IE means water isn't coming in, OE means it isn't draining, UE means an unbalanced load and dE means the door or lid isn't locking, and all four usually clear with a check at the machine. On LG dryers, d80, d90 and d95 mean the exhaust vent is badly restricted. On LG refrigerators, almost every code is a part fault, and LG's advice is to request service.

The tables below come from LG's US Help Library. LG notes that codes vary by model, so match the code to the right appliance and keep the model number from the tag handy.

LG washer codes

Most of these appear on LG front-load washers. Where LG gives a different meaning on top-load washers, the row says so.

CodeWhat it meansWhat the tenant or super can safely checkSend a work order?
IENot enough water coming inSupply taps fully open, hoses not kinked, inlet filters cleanIf supply is fine and it returns
OEWater can't drainDrain hose not kinked, clogged or frozen; on front-loaders, clean the drain filterIf those are clear
UE, UbUnbalanced loadRearrange the laundry; add an item or two to a very small loadOnly if it happens on normal loads
dE, dE1, dE2Door (or top-load lid) not closed or not lockingClose it firmly; unplug 10 seconds and restartIf it persists
LEMotor overloaded and lockedLet it rest 30 minutes, then restart the cycleIf it returns
FEOverfilling, usually a faulty water valveClose both taps, drain the washer, unplug until it's repairedYes
PEWater level sensor malfunctionUnplug 10 seconds and restartIf it returns
tEHeating error, usually a faulty thermistorUnplug 10 seconds, drain, restartIf it persists
CEMotor over-current or drum not reaching speedUnplug 10 seconds and try a cycleIf it persists
FFWasher is frozenCheck hoses and drain filter; warm water in the drumIf it doesn't run once thawed
SUDToo many suds; a suds-reducing routine adds about 2 hoursUse less detergentNo
PFPower failed during a cycleRestart the cycleNo
CLChild lock is onHold the Child Lock button 3 secondsNo
tCLTub clean reminderRun the Tub Clean cycleNo
uE (small u, top-load)Washer is rebalancing on its own, up to three triesNothingNo

LG dryer codes

CodeWhat it meansWhat the tenant or super can safely checkSend a work order?
d75, d80, d90, d95 (or Flow Sense bars)Exhaust vent about 75%, 80%, 90% or 95% blocked; on gas dryers, d80 can mean no gasClean the lint filter; use smaller loads; check the hose behind the dryer for crushing or kinks; outside flapper opens fullyIf it persists: the duct run needs inspection and cleaning
dEDoor not fully closedLint filter fully seated, nothing caught in the door; unplug 5 seconds and restartIf it returns
F0 or flashing Insert FilterLint filter not seated, so the dryer stopsRemove and reinsert the lint filterIf it continues
tE1, tE3Thermistor (temperature sensor) problemUnplug, hold Start/Pause 5 seconds, plug back in, run a cycleIf it returns
TE4Thermistor reads out of rangeNothingYes
HSHumidity sensor error; the dryer runs about 2.5 hoursWipe the sensor bars under the lint filter with a damp cloth, let them dryIf it persists
nPNo current at the heater (home wiring)Cord fully plugged in; breaker off 10 seconds, back onYes if it still won't heat; the outlet needs an electrician
PSImproper voltage in the power cordBreaker off 10 seconds, back onYes if it persists
Gas (9A5)Dryer isn't getting gasDon't touch the gas lineYes
PFPower outage interrupted itSame reset as tE1If it persists
nE, nFWi-Fi module problemNothingOnly if the Wi-Fi features matter
CLChild lock onHold Child Lock 3 secondsNo

Pass one thing on to tenants: LG treats d90 and d95 as needing immediate attention and advises not using the dryer until the exhaust system is cleaned and repaired.

LG refrigerator codes

LG fridge codes usually start with E, r or Er (for example Er FF), depending on the model.

To see the current code on many models, press Freezer Temperature and Express Frz together for at least 3 seconds.

What a super can try first

These come from LG's own steps. None involve opening the appliance or touching gas.

  • Washer reset. For dE, PE, tE and CE, LG's first step is unplugging for 10 seconds and restarting.
  • Dryer reset. Unplug or trip the breaker, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds with the power off, restore power and run a cycle.
  • Water supply. For IE, open both taps fully, straighten the hoses and clean the inlet filters.
  • Drain. For OE, check the drain hose, then clean the drain filter on a front-loader. Have towels ready.
  • Lint and vent. For d-codes, clean the lint filter, wash it with warm water and a soft brush, check the hose behind the dryer, and make sure the outside flapper opens.
  • Fridge power. For FU and gF only, unplug 60 seconds and plug straight into a wall outlet.

When to send a work order

Send one right away for:

  • FE on a washer. Close both taps first.
  • Any LG refrigerator fan, sensor, defrost, communication or refrigerant code (FF, rF, CF, IF, dH, the sensor codes, CO, CH, CL). LG's step for each is to request service.
  • Gas (9A5) on a gas dryer.
  • TE4, or nP that still won't heat.

Send one after a single reset and recheck for:

  • IE, OE, dE, LE, PE, tE or CE that come back.
  • d80 that persists after the lint filter and connector hose are cleared. The duct run likely needs cleaning.
  • d90 or d95 right away if the lint filter and hose are already clean. LG says not to use the dryer until the exhaust is fixed.
  • tE1 or HS that return.
  • FU or gF after the 60-second power-off.

Include the exact code, the model and serial number, and what you tried.
